The harsh reality: why queer clients struggle to find care

More than 80% of queer adults report at least one adverse childhood experience. For our community, finding affirming care isn't optional. It's survival.

Therapy isn't like picking a recipe or researching a vacation. It's heavier, more personal, and often overwhelming. And clients rarely search once and reach out. The process stretches over weeks or even months, full of second-guessing and false starts.

The hidden work behind every inquiry

Before they ever reach out, most queer clients spend hours piecing together information, trying to decide who feels credible, affirming, and safe. They're scanning for what matters most: pronouns, specialties, real experience, and details that help them feel seen.

When that information is missing, vague, or hard to find, it reinforces the idea that affirming care is out of reach. Parents searching for their kids feel this even more deeply.

A cycle that compounds the very pain people are seeking care for

Reading between the lines.

Clients dissect bios and websites, looking for subtle clues about whether a provider is truly affirming.

Searching over and over.

They reword searches again and again, hoping a different phrase will finally surface the right provider.

Sorting through noise.

Reviews and directories often feel incomplete, unreliable, or overwhelming, leaving clients unsure who to trust.

Starting, stopping, starting again.

The weight of the process leads many to give up, then come back months later and start all over.

It's exhausting. It shouldn't be necessary. And it's why QueerPsych exists.

Someone out there is searching for you right now. Maybe it's a trans teen whose family doesn't understand, or a couple navigating coming out later in life. It could be someone who's tried three providers and still hasn't felt safe. Being listed here means being there for someone when it matters most.

Verified, not just listed

This is how trust is built.

Most directories let anyone list and call themselves affirming. We don't. There are no AI shortcuts here. Every profile is reviewed by our team, made up of people from the community, against our Verification Standards. That's why people trust the providers they find here.

One fee. Never charged again. No tiers, no upgrades, no renewals.

Your $15 covers a real verification process, and once you're verified every part of your profile is unlocked.

More than a listing.

Having a website or LinkedIn profile isn't enough. To show up in search engines, and in AI tools like ChatGPT, you need links, consistency, and credibility. Your QueerPsych profile helps by:

Building your online presence. A verified profile on a trusted, community-focused directory gives people one more place to find you.

Linking back to your website. Backlinks from QueerPsych help strengthen your site's search visibility.

Keeping your information structured. Clear, consistent details make it easier for clients, search engines, and AI tools to find and understand you.

Giving you a voice in what we create. When we develop resources and content for the community, we reach out to providers in our directory for their input and expertise.

FAQS

What does the $15 cover?

The cost of verifying your credentials and reviewing your profile. It's a one-time fee, and you'll never be charged again.

How long does verification take?

We strive to review profiles within 3 business days.

What if I'm not approved?

We'll tell you why and invite you to our Affirming Care Training, a virtual session that helps you build the skills to support queer and neurodivergent clients with confidence. Your $15 goes toward the training, and completing it earns your verification.

Can I add colleagues from my practice?

Yes. Each provider gets their own profile and their own one-time $15 verification, and we can connect profiles from the same practice.

I'm still in training. Can I join?

Yes. We'll need to review your information as well as review your supervisor's credentials.

What do you look for when verifying?

Credentials, experience supporting 2SLGBTQIA+ people, understanding of identity, neuro-affirming practice, a clear stance against conversion therapy, and inclusive language. See our full Verification Standards.

Help us grow affirming care together.

We're all individuals, and no two queer experiences are the same. More affirming providers in more places means more people can find someone who understands their specific story, not just the general idea of it.If a provider has made you feel seen, supported, or safe, you know how rare that can be. Nominating them is a way to pay that forward and help us reach more providers in more states.
